Eyelash Extension Prepping Solution, Why is it Essential?

Achieving prolonged durability for your eyelash extensions may pose a challenge, yet it is attainable with a reliable eyelash extension prepping solution. But how does lash primer function and how can you apply it effectively?
Here’s everything you should be aware of regarding lash extension prepping solution and its application to enhance the longevity of your lashes!

We all recognize that preparation plays a highly significant role when applying lash extensions to a client. If the lashes are not pristine, devoid of oil/makeup, and free from dirt before the application process, the retention may be poor, and the lashes may struggle to adhere to the natural lashes (NLs), resulting in premature slipping or falling off. This can be incredibly frustrating.
There are various products available for the prep phase, including:
· Protein pads
· Lash cleansers
· Primers
· Saline solution
· Witch hazel
Each individual may have their own preferred method of preparation, as what works for one person may not necessarily work for another. For instance, Chrissanthie Eyelid Cleanser is an excellent choice for use with a cleanser brush before applying a full set. However, it is crucial to rinse thoroughly after use, as any residue left behind can negatively impact retention.
Personally, I am not particularly fond of protein pads, especially during infills, as I find that they can snag on the extension edges, leaving behind small lint particles around the bases.

How to DIY Lash Extensions

Primers are effective, although it’s important to note that they have a shelf-life, which I discovered myself a few weeks ago. I had been experiencing issues with my volume fans closing up or slipping off
the NLs, and I couldn’t figure out the cause. I tried various remedies, such as changing tweezers, glue, tension, and even lashes themselves. Little did I know that the primer I had been using, which I had opened four months ago, had expired. Once I stopped using it, the problems vanished, and I was able to achieve perfect fanning and placement once again.

Saline solution is commonly used by many lash technicians for prep. Some technicians may add witch hazel, as it helps to open up the cuticles. However, if your client has clean, makeup-free lashes, saline on its own should suffice. Personally, I now exclusively use saline for my prep, unless the lashes are particularly dirty or the client has poor retention, in which case I may incorporate a primer followed by saline.
It is important to note that the use of alcohol-based primers or products should be avoided. Such products actually close the cuticles and dry out the natural lashes. This is why saline, preferably warm saline, is the best option. To ensure the natural lashes properly adhere to the adhesive, they should be slightly moist. This allows for nearly instant adhesion with proper bonding.

How does the eyelash extension prepping solution function?

We are well aware that a stronger attachment to the lashes is CRUCIAL for extended lash extension longevity.
Lash prepping solution aids in expediting the bonding process by dissolving any residual natural oils or makeup on the natural lashes. Additionally, it restores the pH equilibrium of the natural lashes, leading to an enhanced connection between the extensions and the natural lashes. Consequently, this results in prolonged retention of the extensions, ensuring a lengthier lifespan.

What are the primary advantages of utilizing a lash-prepping solution?

· Enhanced grip on lashes leads to expedited attachment
· Decreased application duration results in swifter client turnover
· Elimination of oil, skincare products, and makeup promotes improved bonding and extended retention
· Particularly advantageous for lash clients with oily skin
· This exceptional solution prepares the cuticles of the natural lashes, enabling you to attain heightened adhesion and accelerated attachment.

What if I forgo using a lash extension prepping solution?

If you choose not to utilize a prepping solution, the consequences will be as follows: When attempting to adhere lash extensions onto inadequately cleansed natural lashes, the adhesive will cling to the oil or debris particles instead of securely bonding with the natural lash surface. Unfortunately, this will significantly curtail the longevity of your impeccably crafted lashes.

What are the constituents of a lash extension prepping solution?

These are the primary components that we consider essential for every lash primer:
Firstly, dimethyl ketone, widely recognized as acetone, showcases remarkable properties. It serves as an astringent, effectively eliminating surface oils and dirt. Secondly, polyethanol, commonly referred to as alcohol, is present in minimal quantities in each primer. Its cleansing abilities assist in purging dirt and oil, facilitating a well-prepared foundation to commence your work. Additionally, for clients with sensitive skin, it can provide soothing effects.

How to utilize a lash extension prepping solution?

To begin, eliminate any makeup by employing an oil-free makeup remover or a lash cleanser combined with water. Take two disposable microfiber brushes specifically designed for eyelash extensions and apply a modest quantity of eyelash extension prepping solution to each brush. Position one brush beneath the lashes and the other above them.
Delicately sweep the lash extension prepping solution along the eyelashes, ensuring thorough cleansing of each lash. It is imperative to allow the lashes to completely dry before proceeding with the application of eyelash extensions.

What to be cautious about when utilizing a primer?

When the primary component, polyethanol, comes into contact with the skin, it has the potential to induce dryness and a mild sensation of burning.
Follow the recommended application steps as mentioned earlier and exercise caution to prevent direct contact between the lash primer and your client’s skin.
